Prince Karim Aga Khan Passes Away at 88
Lisbon, Portugal – February 4, 2025: Prince Karim Aga Khan IV (Shah Karim al-Hussaini), the revered spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, has passed away at the age of 88. He breathed his last in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family.
Born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, Prince Karim Aga Khan assumed the mantle of leadership in 1957 at just 20 years old, following the demise of his grandfather. For nearly seven decades, he remained a guiding force for millions of Ismaili Muslims worldwide, championing humanitarian causes and fostering global development.
A visionary leader, Prince Karim established the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a pioneering institution dedicated to healthcare, education, and economic progress across more than 30 countries. His relentless efforts to improve quality of life, particularly in underprivileged communities, earned him global recognition and respect.
Beyond his philanthropic endeavors, Prince Karim Aga Khan was a notable figure in the equestrian world. His passion for horse racing led him to own and breed several acclaimed racehorses, including the legendary Shergar.
He leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, wisdom, and leadership. His children and grandchildren survive him, and the announcement of his successor will follow upon the reading of his will.
