đź’§ Pakistan Warns Against Weaponizing Water: Calls for Unity Over Division at UN Assembly

🇵🇰 “Water Must Be a Force for Peace, Not Discord,” Says Pakistani Envoy | Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to 2026 UN Water Conference
New York (RoshanSindh.com) – July 9, 2025: At the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan has issued a stern warning against any attempts to weaponize water or turn it into a tool of division. Instead, the country emphasized the role of water as a powerful driver of peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.
Speaking during the high-level meeting on SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation for All, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, outlined Pakistan’s vision for transboundary water cooperation and sustainable water governance.
“Let water be a source of unity, not conflict,” he declared.
“Any attempt to create discord through water will only hinder the global journey toward sustainability and peace.”
🌊 Focus on the 2026 UN Water Conference
Ambassador Jadoon reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, calling it a pivotal opportunity to:
- Accelerate progress on SDG 6,
- Strengthen international legal frameworks for transboundary rivers and aquifers,
- Promote equitable and sustainable water sharing.
He emphasized that the conference should give voice to countries of the Global South, especially those whose development and survival depend on shared water resources.
⚠️ Global Water Crisis: Pakistan Among the Most Vulnerable
The Pakistani envoy drew attention to alarming global figures:
- Over 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water,
- Half of the world lacks basic sanitation,
- Water scarcity and climate impacts are intensifying rapidly.
“Pakistan is not immune,” Jadoon stated.
“As a semi-arid and lower riparian country, we depend entirely on the Indus River system – the lifeblood of over 220 million people. The Indus Basin is the world’s largest contiguous irrigation system and a pillar of our food security, health, and energy.”
🤝 Regional Experience, Global Contribution
Ambassador Jadoon welcomed the inclusion of “Transboundary Water Cooperation” as a key dialogue theme at the 2026 conference and offered Pakistan’s extensive treaty-based experience in shared river management as a contribution to the global conversation.
He also expressed appreciation for the inclusive approach by the 2026 conference co-hosts – Senegal and the United Arab Emirates, assuring them of Pakistan’s full support.
“This is a moment for the world to recommit to international water law – principles like equitable use, no significant harm, and the duty to cooperate,” he emphasized.
