Karachi is the City of Sindh — Built by Sindhis, Rooted in Sindhi Heritage

To those who object to the use of Sindhi Ajrak on number plates, claiming that it represents Sindh’s culture and not Karachi’s — let’s set the record straight.

Karachi is a historic city of Sindh, deeply rooted in Sindhi identity and heritage.
Founded in 1729 by a renowned Sindhi businessman, Seth BhojoMal, who hailed from Sehwan, one of Sindh’s ancient cities, he established Kharadar and integrated a new port into Sindh’s longstanding chain of ports such as Debal-Bandar, Keti-Bandar, Kharochan, and Shah-Bandar.

The Founding Sindhi Leaders of Karachi:

  1. Mr. G.M. Syed – President, District Local Board Karachi (1928–1933). A pivotal political figure who moved the historic resolution for Pakistan in the Sindh Assembly in 1945.
  2. Mr. Jamshed Mehta – The first Mayor of Karachi (1920–1933), and a founding member of the Sindh Haari Tehreek (Sindh Peasants’ Movement).
  3. Mr. Hirchand Rai Bharvani – President, Karachi Municipal Committee (1911–1921).

Historically, Karachi was known as the village of Mai Kolachi, inhabited by Sindhi Mirbahar (fisherfolk) and landowners, and it served as a settlement of the ancient city of Bhanbhore and part of the Indus Delta region.

Sindhi-Hindus: Pioneers of Modern Karachi

The role of Sindhi Hindus in shaping Karachi is monumental — they were architects of modern education, literature, entrepreneurship, art, music, philanthropy, and urban development in Sindh.

As noted by renowned historian Mr. Gul Hassan Kalmati in his book Karachi – Marvi of Sindh:

“In the 18th century, a business tycoon Seth Bhojumal arrived from Kharak Bandar, soon followed by other traders from Shah Bandar and Keti Bandar. Karachi, once a small village of Sindhi Muslim fishermen, was transformed by the tireless efforts of Bhojumal and his peers into a thriving port city — with fortified structures, ports, and commercial infrastructure.”

During the Talpur era, Hyderabad served as the capital of Sindh, with Karachi being an integral coastal extension of its economic and cultural influence.

Karachi is not just in Sindh — Karachi is Sindh. Its past, present, and future are deeply intertwined with Sindhi identity.
